They drift in and out of the mortal realm like the drifting in and out of consciousness. This secret organization of the Darkest Souls has terrorized humankind for far too long. They have entered our realm as diseases, as war, as cruel and punishing world leaders, but I know their real face. The truth. When my family was destroyed by a terrible plague, I was immune. Why should I be unaffected when villages all around me were crumbling under the horrible effects of the plague? Because I saw Its face. I saw the murky green of Its glowing eyes, the shadowed crescent moon revealed beneath a blackened hood. I saw immortality. I saw evil incarnate. I, the first and quite possibly the last, had seen Fate. As I watched my family writhe from the excruciating pain of the plague and watched empires crumble beneath the weight of the debilitating disease, I remembered those eyes and the pale swatch of skin and I made an oath.
